Kathryne C's Story

Year Diagnosed: 2009
Type of Cancer: ovarian

Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer is survivable. I encourage all who are diagnosed to stay focused on the future, to walk everyday, even treatment days, even if just for a quarter of a mile...own the day, don't let the disease own you. A friend provided a small book upon diagnosis and suggested that I write the blessings of each day in it and though that might not have been my mindset at the beginning...the exercise changed my outlook. I could not finish writing the blessings of each day as I fell asleep at night. From the ability to walk and enjoy the view, to good meals, cards or calls from friends, to the wonder of the seasons, the care of doctors, nurses and complete strangers...it has been a lesson in love. I have been told that there is no detectable disease and I intend to work to keep it that way. 50 Essential Things to Know or Do about Cancer was recommended to me by another physician/patient and it proved very useful in developing a plan of attack that I could manage...I wasn't just at the mercy of infusions. I recommend zolfran over compozine, but mostly I recommend keeping the faith...it works.
