Devon's Story

Year Diagnosed: 2009
Type of Cancer: Uterine

Listen to your body.

I had had heavy, clotting periods for years, which were not abated by 2 D&Cs, They were bothersome, but I wasn't worried. Then one day I had a stabbing pain in my central lower abdomen. It was so intense that it brought me to my knees but resolved within about 15 mins and I didn't seek immediate care. It also didn't return, but the oddness of it prompted me to see my gyn a month later. He prompted me for an in-office biopsy which led to a D&C which led to my diagnosis and a hysterectomy and removal of ovaries and some lypmph nodes. We caught my cancer very early and I feel very lucky to have had good counsel and a reason to see my gyn. I'm still struggling with lymphedema, but feel fortunate to have found my cancer and to be spared chemo and radiation - at this point.

Support from family and friends made all the difference in my recovery. My awareness of the needs of those who have cancer is one of the gifts that my disease brought me. We can help each other!
