The Bikini Boulderers

Summary:

The name of our group seems pretty simple at first, until you get to know what we are about and what we are doing. Yes, we do boulder in bikinis, that's right. Why would we do something crazy and silly like that?? Can't you get scratched up doing that? Aren't you worried about clothing mishaps? Isn't it harder to climb like that? Aren't you worried about the image? These are the kinds of questions we have already been asked, and loads more, but those are the most common.

Here's our story, in a nutshell: The whole idea started out as a joke. Three of us were hanging out at an outdoor climbing facility, it was 95 degrees, humidity was 90%, and as we were sweating through our shirts and shorts, we started talking about how much cooler we would be climbing in bathing suits, namely bikinis. That led to our group name, The Bikini Boulderers. We decided to make a Facebook page for our group, just for fun, and out of curiosity to see if we would actually get any fans! We really didn't think anything was going to come out of it. That night, Christen put the Facebook page together, posted it, and bam! After a few nights, we had a couple hundred fans! We could not believe it!

After that, it was like a snowball, the fans just kept building, and we were so excited and nervous. What to do next? We decided that if we were going to do this on a large scale, we wanted to do it for a cause that meant something to all of us. We chose cervical cancer. It is the second killer among women in their 20′s and 30′s right now. Extremely common and scary, and we decided that we wanted to do whatever we could to help fund research and increase awareness to men and women about the disease. We also want to spread the word about rock climbing, bouldering specifically, but to each his own!

Climbing has done something life-changing for each of us, and we want everyone around us to feel how exhilarating and powerful this sport can be. It's pretty amazing. You would be surprised how many people have no idea what rock climbing is about. It cracks us up every time we travel to a new climbing spot where people are hiking along, and ask us what the pads on our backs are for. We know it's happened to you.

We have one sponsor, VooDoo Climbing, and are currently on the lookout for a partnership with a cervical cancer organization. We have planned events throughout the rest of the year to try and raise money for research. We have positive and negative feedback for what we are doing, and we gratefully accept all encouragement and criticism. Thankfully, most of the word is positive, and people just want to help us with our goal in getting the word out.
