Camp Kesem Northwestern

Summary:

Who we are: Camp Kesem is a one-week, overnight summer camp for children in the Chicagoland area, ages 6-13 (Teen Camp ages 14-16) who have a parent who has died from cancer, is currently in treatment for cancer, or is in remission from cancer. It provides an opportunity for campers to build self-esteem and gain support from peers facing similar challenges. Northwestern Camp Kesem chapter started in 2003, and we will be having our 8th and (hopefully) largest session in June 12-17 2011 in a YMCA Camp MacLean in Southern WI. We are sponsored by Camp Kesem National, a non-profit organization. We receive all out support from individuals, foundations, and corporations.

What we do: We create a fun, social setting similar to other summer camps and provide underlying support and attention geared directly to addressing the campers' specific familial situations.

Specific outdoor activities: swimming, canoeing, rowing, kayaking, fishing, sports, ropes course.

Bonding activities: cabin chats, feet on bed time, arts & crafts, theater, team building, talent show by age groups.

The staff: More than 30 volunteer counselors from Northwestern University (who each personally raise ). Counselors undergo at least 30 hours of extensive training prior to camp.

Profession staffs on-site: certified nurse, therapist, and national camp advisor.
