2002 Activity Report
December 1991 - December 2002

The Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF) has come a long way in the past eleven years. Everyday we continue to learn and grow and most importantly empower more and more women to educate themselves about gynecologic cancers. This snapshot serves to highlight our successes over the past decade and the many ways that your Foundation has, and is, working for you.

To-date GCF has named 11 Public Service Award recipients. These have included: Larry King, Barbara Walters, Liz Tilberis, Kim Musick, Bruce Akin, Judith Reichman, MD, Kea Simon, Saralyn Mark, MD, Beth Karlan, MD, Cindy Melancon and Fran Drescher.

GCF's 1-800-444-4441 Information Hotline
Since its launch in 1994 over 100,000 calls have been made to this line requesting information regarding doctor referral to a gynecologic cancer specialist (s) and other important information about gynecologic cancers.

Women's Cancer Network - www.wcn.org
In February 1997, GCF launched the Women's Cancer Network (WCN) Web site. This site was established to provide an up-to-date information resource about gynecologic and breast cancer. For the past three years, the site has been home to one of the first online women's cancer risk surveys in all of medicine. The WCN Web site also contains a referral guide to gynecologic oncologists, daily medical news articles, links to related sites and several other helpful features. In 2002 alone, the site has been accessed over four million times. GCF recently partnered with CancerSource.com to help take this award-winning and well-respected resource to an entirely new level by making the WCN the premier site for information about women's cancers on the Internet. Enhancements include the following:

  • An enhanced risk survey tool developed by epidemiologists
  • Improved gynecologic and breast cancer information and new information on lung and colon cancer
  • Upgraded news capabilities
  • A section on frequently asked questions (FAQ)
  • A comprehensive clinical trials section
  • Enhanced Survivor's Section including a " Survivor Wall of Hope," survivor stories, and other topics of interest

GCF Web Site - www.wcn.org/gcf/
GCF's Web site provides comprehensive information about the Foundation's programs and activities and serves as an archive for all GCF printed materials and resources. 2002.

Public Service Announcements
GCF has worked with celebrities such as Cher and Fran Drescher on the production of public service announcements (PSA) promoting the Foundation's 1-800-444-4441 Information Hotline, Women's Cancer Network and important messages about early detection of gynecologic cancer. The Fran Drescher PSA, launched in May of 2002, and has been played more than 7,000 times, reached more than 90 million viewers with the Foundation's message. This PSA has also been shown at sporting events such as a Houston Astros baseball game and at the Los Angeles Kings hockey game.

Public Service Advertisements
GCF has produced five public service advertisements. These advertisements have appeared in numerous national magazines such as Ladies Home Journal, People, Southern Living, Cooking Light, Weight Watchers, Coping and Professional Figure Skating. GCF was especially grateful to Barbara Walters and her co-hosts of The View for appearing in a print ad which GCF placed in national magazines, and in a poster format. The posters have been distributed across the country and carry an important message to women. In 1999 GCF developed a poster called "For Gail" which was and still is being distributed nationally to all SGO/GCF members and supporters upon request.

Educational Video About The Gynecologic Cancer Foundation
This five-minute video was distributed to all SGO/GCF members and supporters in May 2002. The video, which encompasses everything about the Foundation, has been shown at numerous events, health fairs and medical conferences across the country.

Leaps for GCF
GCF has sponsored three "Leap for GCF" run/walks in conjunction with the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO) Annual Meeting. Plans for "A Jazz Jog" are already under way to be held at 2003 SGO Annual Meeting on Women's Cancer.

Media Response Team / Opportunistic Media
Responding to an important need in 2001, the Foundation created a Media Response Team. This team is comprised of SGO/GCF Members from across the country who have volunteered to respond to media requests at a moment's notice based on the established media response guidelines developed by the Communication's Committee. To-date we have had great success and have received numerous acknowledgments from media relative to our timely and informative responses to their requests for interviews and content information.

Articles for USAToday.com and Oncology.com
In September 1999, USAToday.com ran over 22 SGO/GCF member authored articles about gynecologic cancers to raise awareness during Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. In September 2000, GCF supporters authored over 20 articles for Oncology.com, which were highlighted on the site for more than two months.

Hometown Radio Programs
GCF began offering this hometown radio program to the members of SGO in 2000. The 2002 program reached over 38 million people, and plans for 2003 are already underway.

Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month
In 1999 GCF declared, September as Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month (GCAM). An extensive media outreach campaign, as well as grass roots efforts continue to grow every year. We completely redesigned our Publicity Kit, which suggests various ways to reach out to the community and publicize GCAM. In 2001, GCF urged its members to send a letter to their governors asking them to declare GCAM in their state. We were very pleased that in 2002 over 19 states declared September as GCAM. GCF supporters have truly embraced this month and have shown an increasingly impressive display of grassroots outreach efforts and GCF Headquarters has already been notified of plans in place for 2003 activities.

Annual Meeting Media Campaigns
GCF, in partnership with SGO has sponsored seven media campaigns during the SGO Annual Meeting reaching over 490 million people. This campaign positions the SGO Annual Meeting as the premier meeting on women's cancers. Selected studies are highlighted to emphasize the ongoing commitment of gynecologic oncologists in the fight against women's cancers through groundbreaking research and new treatment options.

Video News Releases
The Foundation has produced two-video news releases (VNR) reaching more than seven million people. A VNR is a filmed news-story, which is sent to television stations and cable stations for broadcast use. The first VNR was a comprehensive look at our Women's Cancer Network Web site during its launch in 1997 and the second expressed a message of hope in the fight against women's cancers, featuring a mother and daughter team who were survivors of breast and ovarian cancer.

Educational Brochures
GCF has produced over 15 educational brochures since its inception. Currently GCF distributes the following educational materials at no cost: Maintain Your Gynecologic Health with Education and Early Detection (in English and Spanish), Beating The Odds, Women's Cancer Network, Ovarian Cancer National Resource List (in English and Spanish) and After Breast Cancer: What You Need to Know about your Gynecologic Health.

Pending funding GCF is prepared to print a brochure on "Sexuality After Gynecologic Cancer" and an Ovarian Cancer Product Guide.

Washington Post Supplement "What Every Woman Should Know About Gynecologic Cancer"
In May 2002, GCF produced a 4 page color supplement in the Washington Post which was distributed to over 800, 000 readers. In addition to this over 20,000 copies of the supplement has been distributed to GCF's supporters since its creation. It was also featured on www.washingtonpost.com which reaches nearly 6 million people nationally. In addition, more than 20,000 copies of the supplement have been distributed to the Foundation's members, friends and supporters since May 2002.

Newspaper Matte Releases
GCF has produced two newspaper matte releases in conjunction with Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. A matte release is an article created for use in print media, mainly newspapers. Both releases touted the importance of early detection and educated women about the signs and symptoms most often associated with gynecologic cancers. Each matte release was distributed to more than 10,000 newspapers across the country.

GCF Bulletins
Since its inception GCF has produced and distributed more than 16 Bulletins, which are sent to the Foundations members, friends and supporters. This has been a great vehicle for sharing news and successes over the years, as well as documenting the Foundation's history.

Teaching/Presentation Kits
GCF has developed and distributed a Gynecologic Cancer Education Kit for medical professionals and a Presentation Kit for the Lay Public on ovarian cancer. The Foundation is currently developing a presentation kit for the lay public on cervical cancer with funding in place to produce a presentation kit for the lay public on endometrial cancer.

Lunch and Learn Sessions
In conjunction with the SGO Annual Meeting and throughout the year as requested, GCF holds Lunch and Learn Seminars in English and Spanish. These sessions stress the importance of early detection, seeing an appropriately trained physician and knowing your risk for gynecologic cancers.

We Drive So You Win
In perhaps the most creative contribution to the Foundation to date, SGO member, Dr. Michael Goldberg approached GCF with an idea-"We Drive So You Win". Combining his professional and personal interests to help spread the word about gynecologic cancers, he donated a vintage car to the Foundation. Painted with the GCF and SGO logos, web site address and 800-number. The car was unveiled at the SGO 33rd Annual Meeting in March 2002, Miami, FL. This moving billboard appears at various racing events around the country and GCF's educational materials are distributed along the way.

In a grand display for Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month Dr. F.J. Montz of Johns Hopkins Medical Institute painted his Ducati Italian motorcycle purple and added GCF's logo and key messages. The bike was placed on a rotating display at Johns Hopkins Medical Institute. Educational materials were distributed and GCF's educational video was shown during this event. Plans are for the motorcycle to be displayed at the 2003 SGO Annual Meeting on Women's Cancer.

Lastly, GCF has also partnered with organizations such as Panzer Motorcycle to raise awareness and distribute educational materials at rallies and events across the country.

Uterine Cancer Public Outreach Campaign
GCF received a generous donation from the family of Elizabeth Gillespie to support efforts related to uterine cancer public outreach. A portion of this fund will be earmarked in 2003 for the development of an endometrial cancer education kit for the lay public.

RESEARCH

In 2002, 17 percent of GCF's budget was allocated to Research and Training. In 2003, over 21percent of the budget are allocated to Research and Training.

Since its formation GCF has funded over 20 research grants with plans to fund an additional 6 in 2003. GCF continues to monitor the progress of its award recipients and there is proven data to show that several of GCF's seed grants have helped SGO members parlay these initial grants into much larger grants with such funding institutions as The National Cancer Institute and Department of Defense.

In October 2002 GCF received an endowment of $ 750,000 from Kea Simon to support ovarian cancer research. The GCF leadership is currently working on a 35-40 year plan to use these research dollars to provide an annual grant in Ms. Simon's name beginning in 2003.

TRAINING

In collaboration with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), GCF has funded 6 GCF/NCI Fellows In Training with support for this program totaling over $ 600,000. GCF is finalizing a new program with NCI called the GCF/NCI Scholars Program which will fund up to (2) awards at $ 100,000 per award per year beginning in 2004.

ADVOCACY

GCF is especially proud of the alliances it has formed with organizations that have commitments to women's health, especially those with an interest relative to women's cancer care. Twice a year GCF hosts "Allied Support Group Meetings" which bring together physicians, nurses, cancer survivors, and leaders from national organizations to update each other on programs and to talk about ways the organizations can collaborate. To-date there are 19 member organizations who participate annually in this very important meeting.

GCF held a Strategic Planning Meeting in October of 2001 where a formal plan was developed. The GCF leadership continues to monitor and update the plan on an ongoing basis. This report was distributed to all SGO/GCF members and supporters and is available for viewing on GCF's Web site.

ADMINISTRATION

  • In 2002, 7 percent of GCF's budget was earmarked for administration. This is also true for 2003.
