  • American Society of Association Executives "Award of Excellence"

PUBLIC OUTREACH

  • Annual Meeting Media Campaign
    GCF worked with Ketchum Public Relations to manage media activities for the SGO Annual Meeting. A busy newsroom was staffed on-site in San Diego and the campaign garnered over 180 placements resulting in more than 200 million media impressions (not including web impressions). A front page USA Today article was among the highlights; other coverage included articles in The Chicago Tribune Sunday Edition, The New York Post, The Washington Post, Time Magazine, OB/GYN News.

  • Lunch and Learn Seminars
    GCF conducted two "Lunch and Learn" seminars (one in English and one in Spanish) for the employees of the San Diego Marriott Hotel.

  • Leap for GCF
    Over 120 people participated in GCF’s annual "Leap For GCF" fun run/walk held in conjunction with the SGO Annual Meeting.

  • Survivors Course
    Inspired by the GCF Allied Support Group, an ovarian cancer survivor’s course was offered at the SGO 2000 Annual Meeting and over 100 survivors attended. Plans are underway for a 2001 course.

  • Two Public Service Award Winners Announced
    Judith Reichman, M.D., was presented with GCF’s Public Service Award at the SGO Annual Meeting. Kea Simon was also a GCF 2000 award winner.

  • Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month Preliminary Results
    A newly developed Publicity Kit was mailed to all SGO/GCF members/supporters.

    Aggressive media relations efforts were conducted in top 15 markets and included the following:

    1. A press release to media announcing the month
    2. GCAM primer (information tool) was sent to media which outlined symptoms, risk factors and treatment methods
    3. A press kit was sent to all media
    4. Camera Ready stories were distributed to all newspapers throughout the US
    5. Radio scripts were distributed to all radio outlets
    6. GCAM’s key messages reached the public via the World Wide Web. Several national websites included GCF’s banner ads on their sites and several web chats were held.
    7. SGO/GCF members authored 20 Oncology.com articles on gynecologic cancers and many have donated their honorarium back to GCF
    8. A Satellite Media Tour confirmed a total of 17 broadcasts with 16 stations and/or broadcasters with a total estimated audience reach of over 340,000
    9. GCF supporters hosted hundreds of activities in their local communities in support of GCAM
      To-date preliminary efforts resulted in more than 500 placements including 256 newspaper, 182 radio, 32 television, 45 online, 4 magazine and 2 public service announcement placements with an audience reach of more than 34 million.
    10. A poster with a powerful message from the talk show hosts of The View were sent to all GCF supporters to disseminate in their communities and a campaign to place the advertisement in several magazines took place resulting in confirmed placement to-date in the ACOG Newsletter, MAMM Magazine, In Touch, Metropolitan Home and over 15 other national magazines are holding the file and have agreed to place the ad in their magazines when space permits.

  • Opportunistic Media
    GCF works with Ketchum Public Relations to arrange interviews for members throughout the year as opportunities arise. Approximately 3-5 interviews with SGO/GCF members per month have been conducted.

  • Journal Release Program
    Due to the GCF sponsored journal release program, a groundbreaking research study featured in the Gynecologic Oncology Journal was picked up by ReutersHealth.com and distributed it to newsrooms throughout the country.

  • Bulletins
    Two GCF Bulletins were mailed to GCF supporters. A third Bulletin is in the process of development and will be mailed in December.

  • GCF This Month
    Three GCF This Month Broadcast e-mails were sent to all SGO/GCF members and supporters.

  • GCF Website "New Look and Feel" www.wcn.org/gcf/
    GCF greatly enhanced our website's look. This web site is a comprehensive source providing for GCF information and printed materials.

  • Women’s Cancer Network (WCN)
    A strategic planning meeting was held in March 2000 to determine priorities for WCN. Based on this meeting's outcome, GCF developed a proposal to create new WCN technical/content enhancements, to develop a new WCN brochure and booth handouts, and to conduct a national press conference in 2001.

  • 1-800/444-4441
    GCF's Information/Referral Hotline received over 17,000 calls from January 1, 2000-October 31, 2000.

  • Educational Brochures
    GCF Headquarters distributed over 125,000 educational brochures from January 1-October 31, 2000. Together with the Allied Support Group, GCF managed the update and reprinting of the Ovarian Cancer National Resource List.

  • Allied Support Group Meetings
    GCF facilitated and managed the agenda and meeting details for two allied support group meetings held this year. These collaborative meetings involved over 35 participants from over 20 organizations.

  • Donor Drive Campaign
    For the first time ever, GCF offered a matching program to donors up to $30,000. An introductory post card was mailed to all supporters in late Spring and a formal donor solicitation card was mailed to all supporters in October with the theme of “Your Contribution Now Makes Twice the Difference”

  • Public Service Advertisement
    Plans have been made to arrange for Angelina Jolie, an Academy Award winning actress, to do pro-bono 30 second and 1 minute public service announcements as well as a print ad. Filming is tentatively scheduled for January 2001.

  • Bel Air Orchestra Event
    GCF was a beneficiary of the 2000 inaugural gala conducted by the Bel Air Orchestra to raise funds for research in gynecologic cancers. A GCF representative attended the gala event as a spokesperson and member.

  • Frog Jog, Walk for the Whisper
    GCF sent representatives to speak at and to disseminate educational materials during the Frog Jog in San Francisco and the Walk for the Whisper in Naperville, IL.

  • Congressional Families for Cancer Awareness Luncheon
    GCF was asked by the Congressional Families for Cancer Awareness to have GCF spokespersons to present a luncheon seminar on “Hormones and Cancer” to over 30 congressional spouses. GCF representatives were also asked to attend a congressional awards luncheon honoring members of congress and their spouse who have made outstanding contributions to raising cancer awareness.

  • Allied Medical Meetings
    GCF was represented at various medical meetings across the country including ASCO, AACR, NCI, SGI, Women’s Cancer Summit and others.

  • Dr. Papanicolaou Art Exhibit
    GCF was asked to send educational materials and a representative to speak on gynecologic cancers at an art exhibit/fund raiser honoring Dr. George Papanicolaou in Florida. Event coordinators were so grateful for GCF’s support that plans are in motion to bring this art exhibit to Chicago and potentially to a future annual meeting of SGO.

  • Annual Report
    GCF's 1999 Annual Report was produced and year end income over expense for 1999 was $ 77,038.

  • Hometown Radio Program
    GCF is in the process of developing a hometown radio program at the SGO Annual Meeting 2001 which will be a service provided free to SGO/GCF members. A placement of two interviews per hometown/region of members interviewed is guaranteed.

PROFESSIONAL/PUBLIC EDUCATION

  • Gynecologic Oncology Slide Kit for Medical Professionals
    GCF spearheaded this project which involved collaboration between several other organizations including the Office on Women's Health, Center for Disease Control, National Cancer Institute, Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, and The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition to develop a gynecologic oncology presentation kit. This kit included 82 slides, companion script, and CD and was mailed to all members of SGO/GCF and Deans of Medical Schools. It is also available for downloading from GCF’s website at www.wcn.org/gcf. GCF Headquarters has received much positive feedback about the slide kit and many members have already utilized this presentation. NASA has contacted GCF to include this presentation as well as that of WCN as part of the NASA telehealth series in 2001.

  • Ovarian Cancer Slide Kit for Lay Public
    GCF has received funding to support the development and dissemination of an ovarian cancer slide kit/script to send to all members of SGO/GCF and the ovarian cancer advocate organizations. Work on this kit is already underway and the slide kit will be mailed to all in 2001. GCF Executive Director spoke about this new slide set as part of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance Conference in September.

  • GCF Allied Society Involvement
    GCF was asked to host ovarian and cervical cancer conferences put on by NCI. The CDC asked GCF to send representatives to a cervical cancer strategic planning conference in November and GCF has been asked to co-host and be involved with the planning of a cervical cancer conference with ASHA and NCCC in February 2001. This conference is being funded by a grant from the CDC.

RESEARCH AND TRAINING

  • Research Grant Booklet
    GCF developed and mailed a new comprehensive research booklet providing information about our research grants awards/GCF/NCI fellowship training program and applications for all. It also included a history report of all GCF award recipients and list of all GCF/NCI Fellows.

  • 2001 Research Grants
    Research Grants for 2000 include; Florence and Marshall Schwid Ovarian Cancer Research Grant, National Ovarian Cancer Coalition Ovarian Cancer Research Grant (NEW in 2000) Young Investigator Award (NEW in 2000) and Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Career Development Award (NEW in 2000). The GCF Awards Committee is currently in the process of evaluating applications received and winners will be announced in 2001.

  • GCF/NCI Training Fellowship Program
    GCF has awarded 4 fellowships to-date, 2 additional applicants were recently accepted by the GCF/NCI committee and are in process of placement.

  • 2001 Research Grants
    GCF has received commitment from the above research grant sponsors to continue funding in 2001 and will continue with its GCF/NCI Training Fellowship Program.
