GCF/National Cancer Institute/NCI
Training Fellowship Program
in Gynecologic Oncology
This fellowship is co-sponsored by the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation
and the National Cancer Institute. Two fellows will be selected for two
years, which will be spent at the National Cancer Institute doing basic
research. The fellow(s) will then spend the last two years of the fellowship
doing clinical training at the parent institution.
The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology approved gynecologic
oncology fellowship programs will nominate incoming (1st year) fellows
to be considered for the fellowship award. A national selection committee
will choose two fellows per year from this applicant pool who will then
spend two years in selected laboratories and research groups in the NCI
intramural program intensively conducting basic and translational research.
The curriculum will also include didactic sessions, and a regular seminar
series designed for the fellows in this program. The GCF and the NCI will
equally support the salary of $50,000.
The participating investigators include the leadership within the NCI
and members of The National Academy. The topics under investigation span
immunotoxin development to basic cellular biology, drug development to
vaccine development and gene therapy.
At the end of the research years, the fellows(s) will return to their
home institutions to complete their two years of clinical training in
gynecologic oncology. The fellowship will allow them to engage in investigative
studies early in their specialized training, and to maximize the possibility
of future interactions between the intramural scientists and extramural
academic programs.
The selection will be made at least 8 weeks before match lists are due.
If the home institutions candidate is selected, the home institution
enters the match with another candidate. The home institution thus would
have one fellow at the NCI and one at home in basic research. The following
year the home institution would not take a candidate. If the home institutions
candidate is not selected, then they will enter the match as usual.
