The GCF is a not-for-profit organization established by the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists to support ovarian cancer research, training of cancer specialists in laboratory research, and a variety of programs for patient education and public awareness of gynecologic cancers. Calls to 1/800 444-4441 will enable an individual to obtain a list of nearby specialists in gynecologic oncology, a nation-wide directory of all SGO members, and informational literature. The GCF also sponsors an interactive website called the Women's Cancer Network (www.wcn.org). It offers understandable medical information about gynecologic cancers, treatment options, and experimental therapeutic programs. By answering specific questions a woman will be told her risk for developing gynecologic and breast cancers and how to change those risks.

The National Cancer Institutes Cancer Information Service (CIS)
is a national information and education network. It is a practical first
stop for cancer patients. Trained information specialists provide information
by telephone and on-line through the CISs Live-Help Instant Messaging
service on topics related to specific cancers, cancer treatments, and
coping strategies. Printed materials include What You Need to Know
about Ovarian Cancer, lists of cancer centers and clinical trial
information.

The National Ovarian Cancer Association is dedicated to overcoming
ovarian cancer, providing leadership by supporting women living with
the disease, building awareness among the general public and health
care professionals, and funding research into prevention, early
detection, improved treatments and ultimately, a cure for this disease.
Education programs include a website, Listen to the Whispers
public education kit with video, quarterly newsletter and national
forum on ovarian cancer held in May 99. NOCA has funded a
research chair in ovarian cancer at the University of Ottawa, a national

Largest Ovarian Cancer organization whose mission is to raise awareness
about ovarian cancer to promote early detection and education about the
disease. Sponsors professional education seminars for health care providers
and educational forums for the community. The Coalition is committed to
improving the overall survival rate and quality of life for women and
families living with the disease. There are 45 divisions in the country

The OWH (within the US Department of Health and Human Services) provides
national leadership in advancing womens health through public policy,
research, service delivery, and education. The OWH develops, stimulates,
and coordinates womens health research, health care services, and
public and health professional education and training across the agencies
of the Department of Health and Human Services. Programs include the Centers
of Excellence in Womens Health. These centers provide integrated
and comprehensive clinical services, including regular screening for breast
and gynecological cancers, as well as research on womens health
issues. The OWH also developed the National Womens Health Information
Center (NWHIC). This gateway to over 800 topics on womens health,
including reproductive health, is accessible through the website (www.4woman.gov)
and the toll-free phone service (1-800-994-WOMAN).

This national umbrella organization works to increase public and
professional understanding of ovarian cancer, and to advocate for
more effective diagnostics, treatments, and cure. Members include
survivors and family members, local and national organizations and

The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund is a not-for-profit organization
dedicated to the formulation of early diagnostic treatment programs
and research toward the ultimate conquest of ovarian cancer. As
OCRF strives to find a cure, it also seeks to support patients and their
loved ones in understanding this disease and its treatment as well as
to raise public awareness and provide educational information,
including resource materials and a free video about ovarian cancer.

The SGO is a professional organization of physicians who are
specialists trained in the comprehensive management of women
with cancers of the female reproductive tract. Gynecologic
Oncologists are certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and
Gynecology in obstetrics and gynecology and receive certification of
special competence in gynecologic oncology, following an additional
three to four years of training. Affiliate members of the SGO are
specialists in radiation therapy, medical oncology or pathology who
have particular interests and skills in gynecologic cancer care. The
overall purpose of the SGO is to improve the care of women with
gynecologic cancers and to raise the standards of practice in the
treatment and prevention of gynecologic malignancies.
