September is Gynecologic Cancer
Awareness Month

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

For the past three years, the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF) has declared September as Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month (GCAM). Earmarked as a special time to raise awareness on a national level, GCAM is intended to educate millions of women about gynecologic cancer-related issues. GCAM serves as a vehicle to recognize cancer survivors, acknowledge professionals dedicated to gynecologic cancer treatment and raise awareness on a legislative level by urging governors to declare September GCAM.

In the wake of last year’s terrorist attacks, September will symbolize much more to GCF and the nation. Many will be reflecting on the impact of the attacks and anniversary coverage in the media will no doubt impact the coverage of gynecologic cancer awareness during September. As a result this year, GCF has increased awareness efforts throughout the year on a national basis. For GCAM this September, we intend to focus on grassroots support from friends like you. You have the best opportunities to touch your communities with awareness messages.

To assist in this charge, GCF put together the enclosed Publicity Kit to help you organize and publicize activities in your community.

Inside, you’ll find the following tools and resources:

  • The Publicity Kit booklet contains everything you need to know to organize and promote your event. Check out event ideas (pages 4 – 5), techniques for pitching the media (pages 7 – 9), and event planning action steps (pages 10 – 12), to get started today!
  • Now that planning is complete, you’re ready to publicize. Use the sample media materials as a guide to creating press releases, media alerts, pitch letters and bios. Use these pieces alone or together in a press kit to inform the media and garner coverage for your event.
  • Need extra background materials? The GCAM fact sheet and Four Things You Can Do serve as additional resources.
  • Don’t forget to notify GCF of your event plans and any resulting media coverage by filling-out and faxing-in the member activity and results forms. Not only does it help us keep track of local efforts, we may also include your event in an upcoming Bulletin newsletter.

We urge all GCF members and supporters promote GCAM. If you have any questions or suggestions, please call Karen Carlson at 312-321-6810. The kit is also available by e-mail request to info@thegcf.org.

Good luck!
