September is Gynecologic Cancer
Awareness Month

July 2003

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

For the past four years the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF) has declared September as Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month (GCAM). Earmarked as a special time to raise awareness on a national level, GCAM is intended to educate millions of women about gynecologic cancer-related issues. GCAM serves as a vehicle to recognize cancer survivors, acknowledge professionals dedicated to gynecologic cancer treatment and raise policymaker awareness by urging governors to declare September as Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month.

As with other years, this September we intend to focus on grassroots support from friends like you. You have the best opportunities to touch your communities with awareness messages. It is our hope that the enclosed kit will enable you to develop awareness activities, as well as developing media interest in those activities.

To assist in this charge, GCF developed the enclosed kit to help you organize and publicize activities in your community. We are very grateful to Ortho Biotech for their support of this year's publicity kit, which provides tools and resources to help you reach out in your area. As you'll see inside the kit, there are opportunities for big splashes and small touches, whichever fits your style and community:

  • The publicity kit booklet contains the essentials on how to organize and promote your event. Included in this book are techniques for pitching the media, ideas on possible events and event planning action steps to get started today.
  • Once your planning is complete, you'll be ready to begin publicizing your event. Use the sample media materials included in the kit as a guide when creating media alerts, press releases, pitch letters and biographies. All of these materials are available for your use online at www.wcn.org/gcf. Use these pieces alone or together in a press kit to inform the media and garner coverage for your event.
  • Need extra background materials? The GCAM fact sheet and "Four Things You Can Do" serve as additional resources.
  • Also, do not forget to notify GCF of your event plans and any resulting media coverage by filling out and sending in the member activity and result forms. Not only does it help us keep track of local efforts, we may also wish to include your event in an upcoming newsletter.
  • Finally, please remember to fill out a survey form to let us know if you found these materials helpful and what we can do to improve them next year.

We urge all GCF members and supporters to promote GCAM. If you have any questions or suggestions, please call Karen Carlson at 312-321-6810. The kit is also available online at www.wcn.org/gcf or by email request to info@thegcf.org.

Good luck!
