GCF Public Outreach Programs

Gynecologic Cancer Foundation Information Hotline 1-800-444-4441 In an effort to provide valuable information on gynecologic cancer to the public, the GCF developed the GCF "Information Hotline." Anyone who dials 1-800-444-4441 will be offered 4 types of information. All of these services are free:

  1. By indicating their telephone area code, they will randomly receive the name, address and telephone of gynecologic oncologists in their area code;
  2. An informational brochure "Maintain Your Gynecologic Health," be sent by fax or mail if requested;
  3. Instructions for contacting the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation by mail or telephone;
  4. A directory of all gynecologic oncologists and related specialists will be sent by mail. This allows the caller to contact specialists outside their area code.

Media Dissemination of Scientific Information
A public relations firm is employed by GCF to cover Society of Gynecologic Oncologists' Annual Clinical Meeting to facilitate the dissemination by television, radio and print media of important new scientific findings reported at the meeting. They also arrange on-site interviews of the authors by media specialists who are invited to the meeting.

Public Service Announcement
Popular performer, Cher, helped create a public service announcement (PSA) at no cost to GCF. In the announcement, Cher urges women to call GCF's 1/800 "Information Hotline" to become informed about gynecologic cancers and to obtain additional information. This PSA was telecast nationwide.

Journal Release Program
This program was launched early in 1997 in an effort to focus attention on newsworthy advanced, pre-printed releases to the media of the contents of outstanding abstracts which are published in the Journal of Gynecologic Oncology.

Public Service Award
Larry King was named 1997 recipient for his efforts in raising public awareness about reproductive tract cancers in women.

New Patient Brochure
"Maintain Your Gynecologic Health With Education and Early Detection" was carefully designed to help women understand how reproductive tract cancers are diagnosed and treated, and what symptoms are associated with each disease. A copy of the brochure is disseminated from the SGO/GCF Headquarters offices, GCF's 1-800 information hotline, and mailed upon request to allied organizations and patient support groups.

Community Seminar
"Cancer Prevention for Women: Healthy Lifestyles", was a free seminar sponsored by GCF for people in the Phoenix community. Participants learned about screening guidelines, healthy lifestyles and how to access the health care systems. The seminar emphasized the prevention and early detection of breast, lung, colon and gynecologic cancers.

Women's Cancer Network (WCN)

In 1997, GCF laid the groundwork for the launch of the Women's Cancer Network (WCN), an interactive internet site designed to provide women with easy and convenient access to information about gynecologic and breast cancer using their home or office computer. One of the site's highlights is a survey which enables a woman to determine her risk for cancer. Among other items included on the website are news stories about women's cancer, tips on fighting cancer, a survivor section, general gynecologic cancer information, a guide to finding a gynecologic cancer specialist and links to other women's cancer related sites. Future development for this website is still underway.

"Seal of Quality"
After a rigorous approval process, the GCF received endorsement of the Ad Council. Their endorsement is a way of recognizing the best of the many excellent public service messages produced by organizations.

Annual Frog Jog
This annual fundraiser, hosted by the Frog Jog Running Club, was established in memory of the organizer's mother who was a frog lover that died of ovarian cancer. GCF had a booth set up at the jog where brochures and other information were disseminated and a GCF member representative spoke on the risks and symptoms of ovarian cancer. GCF is the beneficiary of this annual event.
