    Mission of the
    Gynecologic Cancer Foundation

    The mission of the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation is to identify, develop and seek funding for programs which reduce the impact of gynecologic cancers on the physical and emotional health of women and their families.

    These programs include:

    1) Increase public awareness of ways to prevent, detect and treat gynecologic cancers;

    2) Increase public awareness of the central role of gynecologic oncologists in these activities;

    3) Train a cadre of clinicians/scientists to participate in clinically relevant research in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute;

    4) Support promising, innovative research related to malignancies arising in gynecologic organs.

    GCF Funded Programs 1996

    GCF/NCI Research Training Fellowship

    The awardee will study at the National Cancer Institute for 2 years for $50,000/year per trainee. Laboratories in all divisions of the NCI are available to this program. Applicants who are selected will be assisted in identifying the laboratory in which they will carry out their research. The applicant must have completed or be in the final year of an approved fellowship in gynecologic oncology. Each candidate is required to have three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from the director of the candidate's fellowship program. Terri Cornelison, M.D., began her two-year program in July of 1995. Working in the radiobiology laboratory of Doctor Paul Okunieff, she is working on the project, "Prevention of Late Effect Radiation Fibrosis by Cytokine Inhibition."

    Karin Smith/GCF Research Project in Ovarian Cancer

    This research project is for one year at $50,000. This program is intended to support practical, clinically useful research related to ovarian cancer. All applications are to be accepted by established investigators. The recipient must submit a progress report at six months and at the completion of the award.

    Stephen Rubin, M.D., was the 1996 recipient of this research grant for his application entitled, "Adenovirus - mediated gene therapy of human ovarian cancer"

    GCF Research Project in Surgery
    (Supported by a grant partially supported from Ethicon Endo-Surgery)

    This research project is for 1 year at $50,000. All applicants are requested to support studies in innovative, applied surgical techniques related to gynecologic oncology. Proposals may include animal laboratory, research, endosurgery, investigation of wound healing in irradiated tissues, or other surgical questions. Applications will be accepted from investigators with established research programs. The recipient must submit a progress report at six months and at the completion of the award. T. Scott Jennings, M.D. was the 1996 recipient of this research project for his applications entitled, "Comparative Study of Crystalloid vs. Albumin Replacement in Patients with Ovarian Cancer and Ascites."

    Gynecologic Cancer Foundation Information Hotline 1-800-444-4441

    In an effort to provide valuable information on gynecologic cancer to the public, the GCF developed the GCF "Information Hotline."

    Anyone who dials 1-800-444-4441 will be offered 4 types of information. All of these services are free:

    1) By indicating their telephone area code, they will randomly receive the name, address and telephone of gynecologic oncologists in their area code;

    2) An informational brochure "Maintain Your Gynecologic Health with Education and Early Detection," will be sent by fax or mail if requested;

    3) Instructions for contacting the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation by mail or telephone;

    4 ) A directory of all gynecologic oncologists and related specialists will be sent by mail. This allows the caller to contact specialists outside their area code.

    Other Communication Activities funded in 1996 include:

    Media coverage of the annual clinical meeting and pre-printed releases to the media of the contents of outstanding abstracts published in the Journal of Gynecologic Oncology.
