Research Grants and Awards
In April, GCF mailed the Research Grants and Awards booklet to all of SGO/GCF members. The research booklet describes grants and training announcements, and history of GCF research grant award winners and GCF/NCI Fellows. This year's winners for GCF awards are as follows:

Florence & Marshall Schwid Ovarian Cancer Research Fund This research project is for one year at $50,000.
This program is intended to support innovative research related to ovarian cancer and assists the investigator in bridging long term funding. All applications are reviewed by established investigators. The recipient must submit a progress report at six months and at the completion of the award.

Elizabeth Swisher, M.D., was the 2001 recipient of this research grant for her application entitled, "Impact of Epigenetic Modulation on DNA Repair Genes on Chemoresistance and Survival in Ovarian Cancer".

GCF/National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) Ovarian Cancer Research Grant
This research project is for one year at $50,000. This program is intended to support innovated research related to early detection for ovarian cancer and assists the investigator in bridging long term funding. All applications, are reviewed by established investigators. The recipient must submit a progress report at six months at the completion of the award.

William Cliby, M.D. was the 2001 recipient of this research grant for his application entitled, "Validation of an Avian Ovarian Cancer Model".

GCF/Bristol-Myers Squibb Oncology Young Investigator Award
This research project is for one year at $50,000. This program is intended to support innovated research related to gynecologic cancer and the applicant must be in their third year of ABOG approved post residency fellowship training program in gynecologic oncology or junior faculty in their first three years post fellowship. The recipient must submit a progress report at six months at the completion of the award.

Warner Huh, M.D. was the 2001 recipient of this research grant for his application entitled, "Transduced Dendritic Cell Therapy for Cervical Cancer-Alternative Vector Targeting and Conjugate Strategies".

GCF/National Cancer Institute (NCI) Research Training Fellowship
The awardee will study at the National Cancer Institute for 2 years for $50,000/year per trainee. Laboratories in all divisions of the NCI are available to this program. Applicants who are selected will be assisted in identifying the laboratory in which they will carry out their research. The applicant must have completed or be in the final year of an approved fellowship in gynecologic oncology. Each candidate is required to have three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from the director of the candidate's fellowship program.

Monica Brown, M.D., began her fellowship beginning in July 1999 for her project "Gene Expression Profiling in Ovarian Neoplasms" and is currently carrying out her clinical work at Mayo Clinic.

Amir Jazaeri, M.D., began his fellowship at NCI in July 2000 for his project "Use of cDNA microarrays in evaluation of ovarian cancer" and is currently carrying out his clinical work at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Texas.

Ginger Gardner, M.D., began her fellowship at NCI in July 2000 for her project "The development and characterization of novel retinoids for the chemoprevention and treatment of ovarian cancer" and is currently carrying out her clinical work at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.

Kristin K. Zorn, M.D., began her fellowship at NCI in July 2001 for her project "Gene Expressions Profile of Ovarian Cancer Histologic Suptypes" and is currently carrying out her clinical work at University of Oklahoma.

Fellow Award Winner
GCF is pleased to announce that Warner Huh, M.D., of Birmingham Alabama is the 2001 Fellow Award Winner.
