Fall 2003
GCAM's Momentum Continues to Increase Every Year
Throughout September, GCF contacted more than 6,000 media outlets about Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month (GCAM) with information about the importance of early and regular screenings for gynecologic cancers. Many top publications have published information about GCAM and gynecologic cancers, including Better Homes and Gardens, Yahoo! News, the Connecticut Post, Glamour and Vive Magazines. Other GCAM media outreach included an "on air" discussion with Barbara Goff, MD on the Vital Options radio show-a weekly syndicated cancer talk show.
Additionally, a Spanish-language Web site - www.AhoraUSA.com (NowUSA) - recently translated GCF's press release announcing GCAM and published it online. The site, which features articles about health issues, technology, science and the economy, has helped GCF in its communications efforts to Hispanic and Latina women.
New Gynecologic Cancer Video News Release
Thanks to the support of Ortho Biotech, GCF also developed a video news release for GCAM that featured Karl Podratz, MD, PhD, Bobbie Gostout, MD and ovarian cancer survivor Betty Noble and her husband. The release was distributed via satellite to broadcast television stations beginning September 3. The video news release, which is essentially a video version of a press release that provides detailed information to broadcast television stations in a finished news format, articulated GCF's key messages about seeing a gynecologic oncologist for treatment, and the importance of early and regular screening.
To date, over 800 broadcast television stations have downloaded the video news release from the satellite distribution channel following targeted pitching efforts by our public relations team. This wide distribution has reached over 3 million television viewers since September 13 in top markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Miami, Dallas, Washington, Atlanta, Detroit, Seattle and Phoenix. The release will continue to be shown throughout the month and we will track and report on overall usage in later issues of the GCF Bulletin.
GCF is grateful to Ortho Biotech for their support of this news release.
