GCF Reaching Thousands of People Every Day
GCF informational materials were distributed to participants of Walk for the Whisper, an event sponsored by the Illinois chapter of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) in May. GCF's Executive Director Karen Carlson joined nearly 1,000 participants to raise awareness about ovarian cancer. According to Julie Koenig, President, NOCC Illinois Chapter, a portion of the Walk's proceeds will be donated to GCF for ovarian cancer research.
GCF was also visible during ASCO's meeting in May. At the GCF booth we showed the video news release that explains the women's cancer network website, along with the public service announcement, featuring Cher. Visitors to our booth were able to see these items, and pick up our brochures, "Maintain Your Gynecologic Health" and "Beating the Odds."
As we go to press, we have just learned about the tremendous success of the Third Annual Frog Jog that was held on August 9th in San Francisco. The total number of registrants for the race was 850. That is an increase of 100 over the previous year. The race, originated by Kim Musick, is held annually to commemorate her mother who died as a result of ovarian cancer. "Every year, more and more sponsors and runners are involved in the race. The goal is not only to raise money for additional research, but to educate women about the disease. This is one of the best ways to honor a loved one's memory, and their struggles against ovarian cancer," according to Ilana Cass, MD, who was present at the race this year and fielded interviews with local TV and radio stations about the symptoms and risks of gynecologic cancer. For the past two years, $10,000 of the proceeds from the race have been donated to GCF.
The Women's Cancer Network (WCN) website continues to be a hit with 1,300 references in the media since its launch last February. Recently, more than two dozen television stations across the US aired a story about the website, which led to 1,500 women logging on to the WCN during a two-day period.
Since its inception in l994, more than 50,000 calls have been made to GCF's 1-800-444-4441 information hotline. Since its publication in January l997, more than 50,000 brochures, "Maintain Your Gynecologic Health" have been distributed.
