GCF BULLETIN
The official Newsletter of the Gynecologic Cancer
Foundation Volume 2, Number 4
Chairman's Message
It is a pleasure to bring you this edition of the GCF Bulletin. It is hard to believe we are approaching the third year of producing our news-letter. In the following pages, you will notice that although our format is changing, the Bulletin is to remain the same: our organization's primary communication vehicle for reaching Society members, our donors and our friends. Please let us have your input about the new changes, and e-mail the editor, Ronald Alvarez, MD, at rdalvarez@aol.com. Let me summarize the contents of this edition.
We are finalizing our plans to host another Allied Support Group meeting of physicians and ovarian cancer patients during the March on Washington in late September. Those attending THE MARCH are there to specifically advocate for increased funding for cancer research. All GCF members who plan to attend THE MARCH, "Coming Together To Conquer Cancer," are welcome to participate in this meeting.
Many thanks to the executives at Southern Living, Weight Watchers and Cooking Light magazines. They have provided us with advertising space for our most recent ad, "In just l5 minutes a woman can determine her risk for gynecologic and breast cancer," at no charge.
Please note that the GCF/NCI selection committee is still accepting applications for the Research Training Fellowship. Contact any of the gynecologic oncologist program directors or me if you or someone you know is interested in applying to the fellowship program. I am also pleased to announce that a second $50,000 research grant for studies relating to ovarian cancer has been donated by the family of the Florence and Marshall Schwid Family Cancer Fund. The deadline for applications for this grant appears on page 4. And, it is my pleasure to congratulate the winner of the l998 $25,000 GCF Research Grant Award, Judith Wolf, MD. I know you join me in wishing her the best.
And finally, Barbara Walters, ABC TV's co-host of 20-20 and The View, receiveded our l998 Public Service Award. The presentation took place at her office in recognition of her reporting on women's health issues.
In closing, I would like thank each and every one of you for your enduring and consistent support of the Foundation and I hope you are having a wonderful summer.
Sincerely, Wesley C. Fowler, Jr., MDChair, GCF
