GCF BULLETIN
The official Newsletter of the Gynecologic Cancer
Foundation Volume 2, Number 3
Women's Cancer Network Launched
If you were unable to take a cyber-tour of the Women's Cancer Network
(WCN) website in the Informatics Booth in Orlando, you missed out on one
of the most effective patient outreach programs that has been developed
to date. The WCN website, at www.wcn.org, is the first interactive website
that allows a woman to receive an instant assessment of her risk for reproductive
and breast cancers.
Media attention of the new website was running high when the site was
officially unveiled on Tuesday, February 10, 1998 during the Annual Meeting.
NBC's affiliate in Orlando aired a segment on the WCN and various members
have called GCF headquarters letting them know that they saw the WCN video
news release highlighted on their local
stations.
Yahoo!!, one of the nation's largest Internet Web browsers, selected
www.wcn.org as the outstanding web page for February 16, 1998 while Achoo!
designated it the site of the week during March 30-April 4. The real benefits
from these awards are that a large number of computer users who "surf
the web" log on to the winning website to examine the qualities that
result in receiving the recognition. GCF and the WCN were also highlighted
on "SciWire" (www.newswise. com), a web page that maintains a
comprehensive database of news releases from top institutions engaged in
scientific, medical, liberal arts and business research. The WCN logo led
SciWire's March calendar announcing major medical society meetings and events.
The Informatics Committee is constantly updating the site so be sure
to continue to check it out!
