GCF Hosts Allied Support Group Meeting
At the conclusion of the annual meeting in Orlando, a ground breaking
session was held when the Board of Directors of the GCF met with the leaders
of ovarian cancer advocacy organizations. The purpose of the meeting was
to discuss ways the groups might work cooperatively to fulfill their common
goals. In addition to GCF members, others attending represented: The Ovarian
Cancer National Alliance (OCNA), The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition,
Ovar'coming Together, SHARE and others.
Patricia Goldman, President of OCNA, said that "On behalf of the
Alliance members I would like to express our appreciation to GCF for convening
the meeting of the advocacy groups. The plans we made for cooperative efforts
promise development of a greater public awareness of gynecologic cancers."
At the meeting, the Alliance and other allied organizations described
their efforts concerning ovarian cancer advocacy and the GCF members talked
about their hopes for public support. There was mutual agreement --
1) to maximize awareness efforts by coordinating out-reach campaigns
through events such as Walks;
2) to help each other with common legislative and research goals
pertaining to ovarian cancer; and
3) to combine lists of known national and local resources for
patient/family support which could be distributed through various mechanisms.
