GCF Announces Grants for 1997-1998

The Gynecologic Cancer Foundation Headquarters staff recently mailed to all SGO/GCF members the announcements of three research grants related to ovarian cancer, which it will fund for the academic year 1997-1998.

It also announced the continued availability of the GCF/NCI Research Training Fellowship Program which it funds jointly with the National Cancer Institute.

Three Ovarian Cancer Grants

Donations by two patients and one family have funded the three research grants and all have specified that they want the research to be related to ovarian cancer. The grants have several common characteristics, but they are markedly different in some ways. Common characteristics are:

  1. Research is related to ovarian cancer.
  2. Deadline for submission of applications is 12/15/96.
  3. Period of research is July 1, 1997 - June 30, 1998.
  4. Principal investigator must be a member of SGO.
  5. Application forms and research plans are the same.
  6. Amount of grant awarded is the same, $50,000.

Beyond these common characteristics, there are differences in the specifications of the donors.

That committee will review the applications after the deadline for submission (12/15/96) in time for the winners to be announced at the time of the SGO Annual Meeting in Phoenix, March 22-26, 1997.

GCF/NCI Research Training Fellowship Program

The continued availability of this opportunity for gynecologic oncologists to spend two years in one of the many research labs at the NCI was also announced by GCF headquarters. This training is currently available only after completion of a division approved Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology.

The stipend ($50,000/year) is supplied equally by GCF and the NCI

The salary and benefits are supplied by the NCI after GCF contributes its share of the salary. GCF also supplies a travel allowance of $2,500 per year. The program can accommodate two trainees starting each year.
