Anatomy of the Vagina
The vagina is a 3- to 4-inch-long tube. It connects the lower end of the uterus, called the cervix, to the outside of your body. When you have your period, blood passes out of your body through your vagina. Another name for the vagina is the birth canal. That’s because it is the tube through which a baby passes during birth. A thin cell layer called the epithelium lines the walls of the vagina. This layer is made up of squamous epithelial cells. This is where most cancers of the vagina begin to develop.
