Preparing for Cancer Surgery
Once you and your doctor decide on surgery, there are steps to take that will help you get ready. Here are some of the steps you’ll need to take:
- History and Physical Examination. Your doctor or surgeon will examine you. They will also take your medical history before surgery.
- Laboratory Tests. You will need some basic blood tests. Sometimes specialized tests, such as a pregnancy test, are done.
- Imaging Studies. You may have x-rays, CT scans, MRI, or ultrasound before surgery. Your doctor or surgeon will let you know if you need any of these.
- Bowel Preparation. You may need to do a "bowel prep." This will lower your risk of severe infection or intestinal complications. This is often needed when any intestinal surgery might be necessary. The bowel prep may involve drinking large amounts of clear liquids for two days before surgery. It may also involve taking special laxatives and/or using enemas.
- Medical Clearance. You may need specialized functional tests of your heart, lungs, kidneys, or liver. This would be the case if the doctor suspects or knows of medical problems with these organs. The tests ensure the operation is as safe as possible. Sometimes consultation with an internist, cardiologist, or lung specialist is recommended.
