Treatment of gynecologic cancers can have major effects on sexuality since all of the gynecologic cancers develop within the reproductive organs in women. Although most reproductive organs are internal and not directly visible when removed or treated, treatment of these cancers can lead to visible scars from surgery or radiation therapy and changes in hormones which can affect how a woman feels and change her perception of her own sexuality. Many myths about sex after cancer treatment can also lead to poor sexual health and intimacy. Doctors often have too little time to spend talking about sexuality issues during visits for treatment or follow-up care. The following sections will hopefully answer many unasked questions you may have about gynecologic cancer treatment and how to maintain healthy sexuality during and after direct cancer care.
