As many as one out of every 1000 live births may be affected by cancer. Since many women in the U.S. are having babies later, and cancer is a disease that increases with increasing age that number will likely grow. Pregnancy plays a role in the choice of cancer treatment. The oncologist and obstetrician should work together to help a woman decide about treatment as benefits of treatment to the mother have to be weighed against side effects or problems for both the mother and baby.
