Susan Bowerman is the Assistant Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, and is a Registered Dietitian and a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics. She graduated with Distinction in Biology from the University of Colorado, and received her Master’s degree in Food Science and Nutrition from Colorado State University. During her clinical training, she taught extensively and developed educational programs targeted to individuals, groups and industry in areas of health promotion and self-care, women’s health, cardiac health and weight management.
Her wide-ranging expertise in areas such as weight management, sports nutrition, food safety, cooking, consumer education and complementary medicine has been sought by celebrities, athletes, restaurateurs and writers. For six seasons, she was consultant to the (then) Los Angeles Raiders and Raiderettes, providing private consultation and education in sports nutrition. Ms. Bowerman participated in the clinical trials research studying the efficacy of atorvastatin for hyperlipidemia. She has held an appointment as Adjunct Professor at Pepperdine University and for many years she had a busy and successful private practice in Beverly Hills, California.
In addition to her duties as Assistant Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, Ms. Bowerman acts as Coordinator of the UCLA Health Network Obesity Management Program, Coordinator of the Centers for Obesity Research and Education (C.O.R.E.) physician training program, Coordinator, UCLA Healthcare Network physician education program, and Student Coordinator for the Clinical Clerkship in Nutrition program. Additionally, she lectures for Dr. David Heber’s undergraduate course in Physiology of Nutrition at UCLA, to UCLA Medical Residents, Fellows and Housestaff, and for a Nutrition Selective, “Nutrition Guide for Medical Students on the Run” taught annually to first year medical students. Ms. Bowerman is a contributing columnist for the Los Angeles Times Health Section, and wrote the menu plans and recipes for “What Color is Your Diet?” by Dr. David Heber, published by Harper Collins in 2001, and “The L.A. Shape Diet” by Dr. David Heber, published by Harper Collins in 2004.
