Richard R. Barakat, M.D.

Dr. Richard R. Barakat is a nationally and internationally known surgeon and clinical investigator, and is a leader in the field of gynecologic oncology. In 2001, Dr. Barakat assumed the position of Chief of the Gynecology Service in the Department of Surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).

Dr. Barakat is an NCI-funded clinical investigator, who served as project leader in the Gynecology Service Program Project in Ovarian Cancer. He is a member and examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is a member of many societies and colleges, serving on a number of committees. He served as Vice Chair on the Gynecologic Oncology Group’s Cancer Prevention and Control Committee. He served as Chair on the Government Relations Committee for the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists and also served as a council member. In addition, he is a founder of the Metropolitan Gynecologic Cancer Society of New York and was President of the New York Obstetrical Society from 2006-2007. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of the journals Gynecologic Oncology and Oncology, author or co-author of over 200 publications and editor of the MSKCC-MDACC Handbook of Gynecologic Oncology. He is also co-editor of a surgical atlas on surgery for gynecologic cancer and the Editor of the 5th edition of Principles and Practice of Gynecologic Oncology, one of the leading texts in the field.

His areas of expertise include radical surgery for ovarian, endometrial, cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancer. Currently, he is involved in exploring the role of minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy) for the treatment of gynecologic cancers.
